World-Renowned Artist Liu Bolin Brings “Invisible” Art to Singapore in Support of Rare Disorder Patients

Canvas of Hope launches with two-part campaign to raise S$1 million for Rare Disorders Society (Singapore)

Singapore, 14 Aug 2025 – Internationally acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist Liu Bolin, widely known as the “Invisible Man” for his provocative camouflage performances, will bring his globally recognized artistry to Singapore this September — not just for a gallery debut, but to champion children living with rare diseases.

In collaboration with the Rare Disorders Society (Singapore) [RDSS], Liu will headline a two-parter charity initiative named “Canvas of Hope”, beginning on 14 September 2025 at the Glass Dome, PlayPan (Far East Square). The first part on 14 September 2025 will feature an art class led by Liu for children and caregivers supported by RDSS, followed by a one-day public exhibition at The Rare Gallery. This special showcase will include Liu’s works, featuring two new pieces inspired by the rare disease community and created during his visit, along with an artist signing session. Selected merchandise will also be available for sale in support of Canvas of Hope. Together with the second part of the initiative — an evening black-tie auction of Liu’s artworks slated for March 2026 — Canvas of Hope aims to raise SGD 1 million to fund medical assistance programs and family services. Yang Gallery, known for presenting some of the region’s most significant contemporary artworks, will be lending curatorial and presentation support to The Rare Gallery and the upcoming auction as the official gallery partner.

This event is part of Liu’s ongoing commitment to using art as a platform for social change. Notably, in 2024, Liu was commissioned by LVMH to create L’Arbre de Vie (The Tree of Life), a collaborative artwork with young patients from Hôpital Robert-Debré in Paris. The piece was auctioned by Sotheby’s, with proceeds supporting sickle cell anemia research and enhancing the daily lives of children at the hospital.

“Art has the power to heal, to protest, and to connect,” Liu shared. “Having learned about the families supported by RDSS, I realized that my work — often about being unseen — could speak directly to their lived experience. This collaboration is my way of helping them be seen.”

The concept of visibility and hope sits at the heart of the Canvas of Hope. Liu’s art class on 14 September will encourage children to explore identity and self-expression through visual storytelling — a rare opportunity for participants who often undergo complex medical routines, aided by visible equipment, to create freely and be seen for who they are beyond their conditions.

"Our children face the daily challenges of rare diseases and the complexities of their treatments," said Mr Phua Wee Seng, Executive Director and Chief Rare Advocate of the Rare Disorders Society (Singapore). "For just one day, we aspire to ease their struggles by making the medical equipment and tubes that define their lives disappear. This isn't just about art, it's about fostering empathy and uniting our community. We invite everyone to join us in this journey of compassion and support, to help create a world where every child can be seen beyond their diagnosis."

In March 2026, these pieces created for Canvas of Hope will be presented at a curated art auction, with proceeds going directly to RDSS initiatives such as therapy subsidies, mobility support, and caregiver programs.
